



Xiphias gladius is a valuable commercial fish. Its range is in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. An active and voracious predator, it is solitary and prone to long-distance migrations - in summer to more northern areas, in winter it moves southwards to warmer waters. It lives at depths of up to 400 m and is often found in the uppermost layer of water. It is one of the fastest fish. It is believed that it can reach speeds of over 100 km / h. The body of swordfish is strong, elongated, cylindrical in the section, and the tail narrows. The jaw is quite large. As an adult, the upper jaw takes on a characteristic elongated shape in the form of a pointed sword. The eyes are large, blue, in colour. The first dorsal fin is triangular and pointed much larger than the second, which is closer to the tail. The upper part of the body is dark brown, laterally to the belly turns to a light brown tone. All fins are dark brown. Large specimens can be up to 6 m long and weigh over 600 kg. The average length is about 3 m.
