European plaice
Pleuronectes platessa inhabits the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Barents Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and is also found off Greenland. This fish has a benthic lifestyle and lives in the continental shelf zone, usually at a shallow depth of about 10 – 50 m. The plaice has a flat oval body. Its head is small. Both of its eyes are on one side of the body. The muzzle side of the fish is olive-brown with randomly spaced spots of orange or yellow. The blind side is white. Can grow to 1 m in length with a weight of 7 kg. They are usually caught with a special flying collar rig.
