It is widely distributed in the coastal zones of the northern seas of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Massive accumulations of mussels are found in coastal areas with a fast current. The outer surface of the shell can be dark olive or black with alternating dark and light stripes. Its surface of the mussel shell is smooth and shiny, has a round-triangular shape. The length of an adult mussel can reach 15 cm.
