It lives in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and adjacent waters often found off the coast of Norway and Iceland at depths from 160 to 500 meters. The body of the eelpout is colored in dark greenish-brown tones. The belly is yellow-white. In young individuals, the dorsal fin and back are decorated with vertical light stripes in the form of an inverted Y. In older specimens, these stripes double. They can reach 75 cm in length and weigh 4 kg.
