Hippoglossus hippoglossus lives in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent parts of the Arctic Ocean. This predatory fish can be found at a depth of 50 – 500 meters. The flat, elongated body is covered with medium-sized rounded scales, surrounded by smaller scales. Both eyes are located on the upper side of the body. The pectoral fin on the eye side is larger than on the bottom side. The eye side of the body is dark gray or black; in young individuals, lighter spots of irregular shape appear through against a dark background. Its bottom side is white. The mouth is large with large, sharp teeth that are turned back. Adult specimens reach a length of 2 – 2.3 meters, with a mass of 50 – 120 kg. They can grow up to 5 meters long and weigh more than 300 kg. For fishing, it is preferable to use huge lures and dead fish.
