Bighead Carp
Bighead carp is a valuable commercial fish. It is wide spread in the water bodies of the former USSR and neighboring countries. Its diet is based on phytoplankton. Also, it feeds on detritus and zooplankton. Bighead carp’s body is moderately long, roundish and characterized by a big head. The mouth is turned upward. The eyes are shifted to the lower part of the head, for which in Russian this fish is called “thick forehead”. Fry are light-colored or golden along flanks, whereas adult bighead carp has dark spots on its flanks. On its belly, there is a keel located between the ventral fins and the anus. An adult bighead carp may reach a length up to 1.5 m and a weight exceeding 30 kg.
