Young salmon feeds on insects and crustaceans. Adult salmons prefer small schooling fish. The salmon's elongated body is covered with small silvery scales. Its spotted back is usually darker than its belly and has a bluish tinge. The head is oblong, with a plenty of sharp teeth. Fins are short and their color is brownish gray, there is an adipose fin, typical for salmonids. Salmon’s appearance changes in the period of spawning. Its body turns darker, reddish orange spots appear on its head and flanks. Males’ jaws grow longer and develop a distinct hooking bend. Average adult salmon weights about 6 to 7 kg. A large specimen may reach a weight of 15 kg.
