The Grayling is a species of freshwater fish in the salmon family Salmonidae, that is common all over Europe. In Russia, its native range extends up to the Urals. Usually it lives in water bodies with clean cold flowing water. It likes rivers with strong currents and rapids. Grayling seldom occurs in lakes. It is a predatory, it feeds on small bottom water animals, fish roe and insects that fall into the water. Young fish normally shoal in the shallows. Adult grayling prefer deeper areas. The grayling's body is elongated and covered with small scales, its head is oblong and pointed in shape. Its back is greenish gray with dark spots. Its belly is silvery white. The dorsal fin has vivid coloring, there are violet and red patterns and stripes on it. Paired fins are yellow or red. Its coloring turns more vivid for breeding season. Also in this time, the rear part of the dorsal fin of male graylings grows bigger. Normally a grayling’s body length doesn’t exceed 50 cm. Its average weight is about 0.5 to 1 kg.
